SALEM - In a charged public forum here Wednesday, Memorial Hospital of Salem County CEO Jim Angle took center floor as residents one-by-one voiced their concerns about the potential closure of the facility's maternity ward. Keeping the utmost civility, a prerequisite set by freeholders facilitating the meeting here at the Salem County Courthouse, many of the public comments carried the intonation that the hospital is protecting its profit margin before people.

A South Jersey legislator wants the state to be able to suspend local elected officials who face criminal charges.
State Sen. Stephen M. Sweeney, D-3, said he will introduce a bill that would require that action against officials indicted for offenses that, upon conviction, would result in forfeiture of office.

TRENTON - Legislation that would require students criminal histories to be reported to school districts and passed on when students transfer schools was given unanimous approval Thursday by the Senate, and now heads to the desk of Gov. Jon S. Corzine.

SALEM - Two Cumberland County towns will split $995,825 in state Small Cities grants to the 3rd legislative district.
State Senator Stephen Sweeney, Assemblyman John Burzichelli and Assemblywoman Celeste Riley announced the grants totaling almost $1.7 million to municipalities in the district on Thursday.
Lawrence Township will receive $400,000 for sidewalk safety and accessibility. The project includes curbing, drainage and lighting on Maple Avenue.

WEST DEPTFORD TWP. - State Senate Majority Leader Stephen Sweeney, Assemblyman John Burzichelli and Assemblywoman Celeste Riley on Tuesday announced $328,000 in Clean Communities grants to be split among the third legislative district's 40 municipalities.
The grants are used for litter prevention and public education, adopt-a-highway campaigns and graffiti cleanup.
